Cops will assume its a gun until they see that its not. Meaning they will draw their guns on you with only their finger stopping you from being killed on the spot which is generally a pretty terrible situation to put yourself in. If you handle it while dealing with police, you are probably going to die.

Obviously they will know immediatly that it isnt a real gun once they handle it or see it up close in detail, telling them then would be moot. So yeah, i would clarify right away that its a pipe if you are being searched. You have to be pretty fucking dumb to take that thing out of your house though in the first place.
