alright so I'm being accused of a misdemeanor assault. The only evidence is audio but I don't know how good that is for a fight. They attacked me and I defended myself. The person attacking is on 13 or so different medications and seeing a shrink. Can I use that to my advantage? Also will I get a public defender or is that only for felonies? Also have pictures of injury from previous scuffle.

Don't know much about law, but in my state it's illegal to audio tape someone without telling them first. The evidence can be thrown out and won't be considered in the case.
I think you could use the mental shit the other guy is going through to help your case, just make sure you have your own ducks in a row.

In where I live, recording the audio/video without consent would get you in trouble. No matter what the reason is. I don't know what it'd be in your place, but best to keep the record, just in case, though you don't mention it until it's become absolutely necessary or permitted by court.
Also, the better ammo would be your injuries, doctor/forensic perhaps could help to determine that you're the one in defense not the perpetrator.
