I've been texting this girl for a couple of weeks. I asked to go for dinner to this place I know and she said she was down for it but because of money and time issues she postponed. She has been texting me all this time though and keeps bringing up our pending date so I think she is legit interested.
Now, I don't know she is not seeing anyone, because she hasn't mentioned a guy in the multiple times we have talked and texted. But today she told me she had to cancel her vacations because the guy who was supposed to go with her had to work. It's likely this guy is a lifelong friend of hers but I don't know too much about her. I want to figure out if this girl is single or if I'm wasting my time but I don't want to come off too strong or sound like I'm interrogating her.
The question is, is it a good idea to straight up ask her if she is with this guy? If so, what is the best approach?

You must always assume a girl has a bf or guys around that fill that slot. She was going on vacation with this guy and won't now because he has to work. If he was just some guy she could plug another in and go. Anyway, if you are ok with dating a girl who is also dating other guys fine, if not, find another girl.

Yeah, she is the kind of girl that I want to date, not just to hook up, but I don't want to interfere with another relationship. I'm just concerned that asking her if he is her bf will scare her off, since I was trying to work my way up smoothly. But I guess it must happen.

Don't say a word about the other guy, ever. If she's not bringing him into what you are starting why should you. If you want to go on a date why wait till she has the money, you offer to pay. Thats a date.
However don't be naive and believe since she goes on a date with you there are not other men in her life.

I did that but she said she wants to be able to pay for herself, even if she is still studying. In my country it's actually pretty common to split the bill during dates, although maybe that's a sign she doesn't see it as a date
