that's the son of a bitch about alcohol OP, you can't stop unless you really, truly need to. This usually comes after you've fucked up either relationships or your own body.

I've been drinking pretty much every weekend since I turned 17 (now 25) with stretches of time up to 6 months where I'd drink daily.

I don't really have any advice except quit while you're ahead

I remember when I was drunk basically 7 days out of the week. I would go to school hungover everyday, but luckily I still did okay.

The moment I stopped drinking was basically when I started to improve myself. I think the key to get rid of a drinking problem is to fix the actual problem behind the alcohol.

That's my two cents. Good luck Op

If you don't want to stop you won't stop until it becomes impossible for you to continue the habit. Just remember, if you can't stop you will end up with no one and nothing somewhere down the road.

how do people get addicted to alcohol? i've been "addicted" to cigarettes and just said im done with this trash and i haven't smoked since i was 17. are all people this weak willed?
>>
>>18439659
I feel you man. I have regular access to most "hard" drugs and I despite partaking I've never developed a habit outside of smoking weed a few times a week. I drink maybe once or twice every other weekend when I can be arsed to go out.

Ever have drunken sex and regretted it?
If you have, then you know exactly why to quit.
If you haven't, you should quit before you do.
>>
>>18439659
How long did you smoke for and how much did you smoke? If you say less than 10 years then neck yourself for thinking you had an addiction to begin with and for thinking you're better than people who are addicts. Oh wait, you said you haven't smoked since you were 17. So what you smoked for a couple years max? That's hardly enough time to create a habit out of something that is a part of your daily routine. Stupid ass kid.

I smoked for 17 years, on average a pack a day the entire time, and there were times it was 2 packs a day. I haven't smoked in a little over two years but I still crave them and that feeling will probably never go away.

Amazingly, people are different from each other. This is why robots on /r9k/ get mad when they are told to 'be yourself' by a normie, why regular people give crap advice to people with major depression, and why non-addicts say 'just use a little willpower bro don't be a bitch' when addiction is actually a mental disorder.

The vast majority of people are totally incapable of imagining things from a different perspective where things that worked for them don't work for others, which is why most of this board is fucking trash.

You aren't wrong. I'm just saying in my experience self control has helped me a lot.

Out of boredom? Find something to do. I was addicted to porn but now I only look at webcam titties when I am bored. I look for distractions to help me with this dying addition.

When I had a brief cigar addition I got the fuck away from the problem. Did not purchase any and stayed away from the bars that allow smoking.
>>
As someone who just came home from a detox center today, I'd recommend that you quit while you're ahead. Don't do what I did and wait until it's caused heaps of problems.
>>
>>18439659
Technically, booze is a hard drugs unlike smoking, people get addicted to it more easily and is harder to get rid of
>>
>>18439659

I have a genetic predisposition to it inherited from my dad and grandfather and who knows how far back it goes. When I'm not drinking (I can go sober at work, or even for a few months at a time), my life doesn't feel right.

Chemically alone I'm addicted, but then there's the added layer of the fact that my life is surrounded by drinkers. If I decide to quit cold turkey, it means my entire life shuts down and I basically have nothing to do but play vidya alone and go for a bike ride.

OP, as someone who was a full blown alcoholic by the time he was 17 (and is 30 now), I'd advise going to your doctor or a therapist or something and asking for help. I don't think AA is going to help (never has for me, because like you, I don't want to quit), but there's medication like naltrexone that may help.

Either way, find a way to manage it before it's too late. Maybe it's putting money in an account that only lets you withdraw enough money each day to buy a small amount of alcohol or something.

OP, it doesn't sound like you're an alcoholic, but it sounds like you are on your way to becoming one.
I was in the same situation, I was constantly drunk, and would even drink at work to keep the "buzz" going. When I realized I was on the road to alcoholism, I stopped cold turkey. I asserted my will power, and wouldn't put myself into situations where I could get a drink. After 2 years of this, I'm now able to enjoy a casual drink every once in a while without the need to get shitfaced on the regular.
