I think your statement is a generalization however some girls and guys do this to look older. They want to be viewed as more mature and not look like a teenager. Then when they're 30, they'll try to look 20. It's also used to get into bars or clubs without getting carded but that doesn't always work. Just be careful, if they're phony on the outside they're probably phony on the inside.

I think """"our generation"""" just doesn't really grow up. I saw this band yesterday and the singer is in his forties, but doesn't look like what one would expect a 40 year old to look like.

I've also noticed in some social groups 30 year olds aren't really expected to grow up, they still dress fashionably and their interests in music and movies is always changing. It is like age 16 - 35~ really doesn't have much different. And maybe as we get older that will change or stay the same.

For example, I saw a picture of my girlfriends dad the other day when he was 25. He was fat, balding, wearing a gold watch, had a white button up shirt tucked into his khaki pants, and he looked 40.

But, age isn't that big of a deal, OP. 18 isn't that young. What? do you want people to look like children for most of their lives? Are you anxious about growing older and looking older?

Perhaps they're grooming themselves to be more mature for that reason. Do you remember when you were kid and tried to dress and act like adults?

Also, lifestyle choices contributed into faster/slower aging for some. Nowadays unhealthy fastfood hormones lifestyle might have something to do with this too.

I'm 41 and i supposed to be bald or grey haired and have chickenlegs behind my eyes......but isn't. I still look like a 30something. It looks like i have Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves' genes. Different traits can make you look older than you are. Generally they won't age like milk because they'll just grow into their features. Obviously this doesn't apply to low skin quality or something like that, but many traits that make people seem older simply need to be grown into.
