So, I'm an artist and a fairly good one (not tooting my own horn, but it's necessary to provide context for this post). Recently have been seeking dates online and on Tinder, and when I say I'm an artist, the dates inevitably ask to see my work, and then get really enthusiastic when they do. Recently, I turned someone down because they were really eager to "have a friend to draw with at coffee shops!" or "draw my board game idea!" before we had even met in person.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Is there a term for when you're reduced to your specific ability (whether sports, music, art, etc)? I'm not seeking someone talented, but rather someone with an authentic personality that I can get along with and laugh with and everything. I feel offended when people reduce me to my talent, even if it's my job and my livelihood. Am I in the wrong for turning people down when that's the only attribute they're attracted to, or seems to be?

Reject them
Move on
That's life

Or you can life in a artist city and just date other artists
>>
>>18415999
I can understand why you would be offended, but if I may offer advice, you shouldn't get mad about having an in that works. More likely than not, they're not solely attracted to you for being an artist - probably wouldn't get as many hits if you were twice as talented but looked like Quasimodo you know? And part of dating, and one of the most fun parts for me at least, is discovering things about the other person. I think you're overreacting by assuming these girls just want you to be their painter on a leash. I'm sure most of the time these girls offering to draw with you and stuff are just trying to connect with you over something you obviously enjoy. You might as well hide that you're an artist if you don't want them to talk about it, it's kind of ridiculous.
>>
As an artist, you'll find that unless it pays well, there is no shame in not wasting your time with people who don't understand the effort it takes for art. I don't know what your medium is, but "drawing at the coffee shop" isn't a valid / comfortable option for everyone... However, having an "art night" is a great way to break the ice with a fellow artist.

no need to toot your own horn. even the shittiest fucking artist will get those requests on fucking tinder.
>>
>>18415999
Your typing style is sorta feminine. Are you a dude or a chick? I'm not trying to insult you if you're a man, at all. It's just relevant information.
>>
>>18415999

Edgar Degas, a french painter, once said he never married because he couldn't live with the idea of finishing a painting to have his wife say, "what a pretty picture."

But, I can totally relate. As a filmmaker, and an award winning one at that, I'd rather be with someone who appreciates the arts, but not do it as a hobby kind of thing and devalue the creative and technical process like what it sounds like the two situations you were talking about are. At the end of the day, it is work and it is mentally and physically exhausting.

Are you in the wrong? No. Trust your intuition. That is unless it is holding you back and keeping you from bonding with someone.

Let me ask you, how would your perfect/ideal partner react to your abilities?
>>
>>18416168

Nope, OP is probably just more literate and less brutish than you.
>>
>>18416154
That kind of just proves OP's point, people who go "Oh, you're an artist? Draw me something!" are a waste of time.
>>
>>18416168
If OP was a woman, then they wouldn't care about a preoccupation about occupation.
Men, in general, don't give a shit what women do to afford looking that sexy
>>
>>18415999
You are way too scared of being used... Yu should have tooken that one up on it. Your work would have a great outlet and theirs would have great material.
Don't get me wrong you need to connect in other ways as well, but don't write people off because your art can help their career as well, you cold miss out on a wonderful partnership.
>>
Instead of sending dick pics send drawings of dicks instead. That way they will be intrigued enough to respond but turned off enough to have a negative association with your art.

If they annoy you further with requests insist that you work strictly with fetishists in the furry porn community and only take commission through furaffinity.net.
>>
>>18416178

>people who engage and connect are a waste of time

disagree. granted i am glossing over the people you are clearly indicating, the ones who just need a favor for their own projects, but a lot of people connect and collab well that way.
>>
>>18416190
Yeah because that will attract exactly the kind of person the OP wants to be with hahahaha
>>
>>18416184
>You are way too scared of being used

Side note: You niggers ever read the Sirens of Titan?
>>
>>18416204

Anon I am a furry and find this deeply offensive!! Love comes in all shapes and sizes <3
>>
>>18416176
What a weirdly hostile response. I spend all day reading & editing other people's writing for my job; it's often possible to gauge somebody's gender and age from their writing style. No, it's not foolproof (obviously, if OP happens to be a dude) - just broad tendencies that men and women have when they write.
>>
>>18416208
You aren't responding to me, you drunk faggot

When people want you to do free art like it's your fun little hobby and not a career you're trying to either maintain or jumpstart, they are a waste of time.

When other artists want to collab, that's an entirely different conversation.

But I guess if you just have unlimited time to doodle unpaid commissions go for it.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

>When other artists want to collab, that's an entirely different conversation.

Why is different situation anon?
>>
>>18416237
>doing free art for someone you just met

>working on a piece with someone and seeing each other's skills, maybe learning things from each other, having a good time hanging out, casual, no "actually can you do this differently?" once you're done
>>
>>18416223
>>18416210
Well that escalated quickly
>>
I think it's okay to find it a turn off. I'm an artist too and had a lady call me a "little artist," which is more demeaning than cute to me. I don't blame the people you describe, though. They're probably just using whatever common lines they've heard during their lives. Still would probably have the same reaction as you and move on.
