I'm an American, I graduated with a BA in Political Science about 8 months ago, and since then I have been looking for work with no success. I don't care about making a lot of money, and I'm willing to go anywhere, but I do need to build experience in the field because I want to pursue a career in government. Problem is, almost every job that meets what I'm looking for requires experience in the field that I'm trying to get into. Even more frustrating is that these jobs advertise themselves as 'entry-level'. I honestly don't care where I go or what I'm doing or how much they're paying me so long as I can afford to live and the experience will count for the purposes of later applying to a government position. I would, ideally, like to go somewhere where I can seek a Master's at the same time, because I want to move on to teaching at the collegiate level in the future, but that's a bonus rather than a requirement.

I'd greatly appreciate advice on what to do, seems like everyone I've talked to ends up saying it's about 'connections' but I just don't have any that are relevant for the work I want to get into.

What have you got on your CV so far in terms of part time jobs, internships, extra curricular?

welcome to the meme of a college degree. everyone wants work experience for an entry level position and they're not going to pay you enough to cover those loans.

idk what to tell you, I never had a degree to begin with so I had to force all the doors open. I didn't have a piece of paper to do it, nor did I have a connected family to have someone else open the doors.

if you're good in interviews, force an interview. umm, harder to explain than to do. try something like calling a place you're interested in working for that's hiring, ask for the hiring manager or look up who you need to talk to before you call and either ask for them directly, or put in their extension directly. introduce yourself, explain that you'd be interested in setting up a time to talk about your experience and credentials. once you have that set up, and only once you have it set up, then email them your resume and go through their application process.

you just stepped to the front of the line of people they're going to consider, just showed more drive and resourcefulness in hunting down their direct contact than, I promise you, 90% of candidates, and literally all you have to do is not be a blithering idiot in the interview. make it known that you are an asset they need and demonstrate why. make them laugh but do not focus on a personal connection, this is fucking business, focus on that.

you have experience silly, four years of it during your degree!

do not go for the, oh you just apply online, bullshit. you get a time that you are going to be in front of the hiring manager before you do any of that shit.

Enjoy permanent unemployment and thousands of dollars of debt. Shouldn't have been a retard when picking degrees

What is a lobbyist? Government think tank? Intelligence community?

Some people say your previous professors might work as a starting point, but honestly, unless they still work or have recently worked in the field AND you had a good relationship (none of this "I got an A" crap, I mean actually talking to them and visiting office hours) with them would that be likely to work.
>>

speaking of intelligence community, did you learn a second language? The intelligence community is very easy to enter provided you meet the requirements.
One of my favorites for students is the NGA

I worked as an administrative specialist at a community college for 2 years (student-work). I have volunteered in helping the neighborhood association board both in terms of administrative tasks like keeping meeting minutes as well as in performing property maintenance. I also volunteered time to help tutor students at the university I graduated at. I speak/read/write Japanese at the JLPT N4 level (untested though).

Yes, though I should mention I am totally unwilling to do military stuff because I could not get through Basic Training.

I would recommend getting a regular job and looking for a real job on your off time. As someone who was in your shoes, I would go from "i got called in for an interview next week" to "they'll tell me in two weeks" to "got another interview on friday" to "the job fair is in 2 weeks", time fucking flies. Next thing you know, you're a year removed from graduation, no job, no money, asking mom for $$ for bus to go to interview, mom still paying phone bill. Its a horrible feeling. That being said, find yourself a job, ANYTHING.

You are not above any job just because you have a piece of paper.

Good luck.
