Do whatever you want with your life. It's "pretentious" if you praise yourself a lot in conversation. But some people will call you pretentious if they're jealous of you, even if your behavior is fine. You're never going to make everybody like you, so don't worry about it too much. Just do what comes naturally to you, be yourself, and make friends out of the people who like you the way you are

I had to slowly learn how to not be this guy as a teenager.

The main thing is pay attention to other people's reactions to you and learn from them. The people who are close to you, if they're not pretentious fucks like you, will let you know when you're being like this.

Also, read some cringe subreddits like r/iamverysmart to see what you sound like to other people. And for the love of God, a lot of awkwardness can be averted if you just think whether you really need to say what you want to say before you do.

Just don't make everything about you all the time. Go out of your way to find out what other people are up to, and praise them on it. Got a friend who does dance or art, or woodworking, or making dead animals wear suits in silly poses, tell them it's cool. If people feel like you have as much appreciation for their stuff as you do your own they will pretty much never find you pretentious.
