Because my life was shit before r9k, and felt completely isolated and unrelatable to any person I ever met. You're conflating a lot of things OP, and you're not thinking clearly. Everyone has expressed this well.

I'd like to propose something though. The idea that "/pol/ is always right" has been around for a while, but I don't think I've ever seen it elaborated on. The reason this aphorism is held true is not because /pol/ has meme magic, but because 4chan's structure has a bias towards being open about opinions.

What you see on this site is pure, ubfiltered, raw humanity. The posts are what the people around you are really thinking about. The replies are what people wish they could say to you everytime you open your mouth. You post something, and people respond HONESTLY (yes, trolling is a form of honesty. It means that the person doesn't think something is worth taking seriously).

This means that a political board will have people posting their raw opinions. This is why "/pol/ is always right". There's nothing magic about it, it's not a magic 8ball. Ask them what next year's GDP will be, and you'll get answers spanning the whole spectrum from "don't care" to. "Very, very wrong". Ask them what they think about immigrants, or how people will vote, and you suddenly have a solid predictor.

The problem is that it became a victim of its own success. People who are used to social posturing (reddit) came into the site en masse, and now there's a glut of people who aren't being honest, and are just there to post stupid meme magic shit. The system only works when people are sharing their true feelings, and when a large portion of the userbase is effectively trolling and looking for cues on what to believe, you've effectively decalibrated the system that allowed you to make predictions in the first place. I believe that this is what people mean by "the new /pol/ is completely different from the old". A large portion of the userbase is now being dishonest.

I am the same person. I'm aware that most of the /r9k/ rhetoric, which is what this thread is about, centers on women, but I came into the thread out of curiosity and found some of the arguments to resonate with some of the things I've felt about society. Namely, that a large part of what contributes to material success has more to do with being able to politick effectively rather than possessing any kind of merit. Speaking more practically, what this means is that even if I were to pursue a cure for cancer, to use your example, most of my time would be consumed by upholding institutionalized ideas and placating my benefactors rather than doing any actual interesting work.

Perhaps that's an oversimplified, and, well, bitter(to put it bluntly) way of looking at it, but I've been punished too many times for unconventional thinking -- and seen too many succeed simply by upholding the status quo -- to not feel that way. And yeah, there's a good possibility that I'm not actually all that clever and nobody owes it to me to listen to my "groundbreaking" ideas. But in the end that just reinforces the idea that nonparticipation is probably the correct course of action. My problem is that I can tell myself these things, but I can't feel them; can't commit. I FEEL like I want to be out there, doing things, but every time I sit down and THINK about it, it doesn't really make sense.
