I'm from Germany originally, BBA is in HR, Master in Sociology, PhD in Psychology. I know its China, but Zhejiang is one of China's top unis, and I figured if I can speak Mandarin at the end of those 3 years, itll all be well.

I know ppl talk down on Chinese academics, but I am not looking to be a top researcher or the like. Ideally, I just land a job as prof somewhere, or be a consultant and prof.

If the Chin. uni makes it easier to get a PhD, all the better for me.

i had an SSH via my old uni which was much better than the vpns my friends were using. most of those vpns are now blocked.

look into SSH, maybe the computer club in your college runs one (discretely) for members abroad who want to look at local sports events streamed live, ensure a connection in dodgy countries, that kind of thing.

Make sure to make a Wechat account to stay in touch with senpai and new friends there (it's a very popular social media platform in china). Be sure to make a new email @ mail.qq. com as gmail will be blocked on most cases especially if you end up not getting a VPN like I did. Obviously Skype works. Here's what I would do. Search around on Google or ask any contacts in China for Hangzhou Wechat groups. There should be a foreign people's group, one for flat hunting, one for job hunting, one for language exchange, and plenty of sex ones where guys share amateur videos of themselves with ugly prostitutes and pretend it's a girl they picked up.

Once you've set yourself up over there, enjoy the depression, shallow friendships, and alcohol addiction that follows.

Thanks. I know I sound cynical as fuck but I'm having a blast. What I want to say about the shallow friendships is a lot like pic related. You are surrounded by people but it feels like you're alone. But in reality it seems like everyone feels like that so in a way, you aren't alone because you and all the other expats are in the same position. Of course no one will admit it because everyone else is wearing the same happy mask as you. Get in some of these foreign networks and make some friends. Dare I say it, Reddit meet ups are pretty good. Guaranteed to meet some like minded people.

I actually found I was a lot happier and that I had more fun when I made Chinese friends. Not only was I drinking less but I was spending more time with people getting their lives sorted. Seriously a bunch of my Chinese friends have started businesses, it is awesome. Also don't be scared if a Chinese guy suggests going to the massage parlor or wants to share his porn with you. It's a way to bond and kind of normal.
