So I dont really have any family or ties to hold me to where I live now. I feel like I dont like Cincinnati Ohio area enough to live here my entire life. I love living in the city vs suburbia but I want to move on.
I will have an engineering degree soon with about 6 years of engineering experience so I'll make around 50k a year. I dont want to move somewhere super high in cost of living but it seems all of those cities are most appealing to me.
I'm just kind of lost on how I decide where to go and what steps should be taken when deciding where to live. Ill have vacation time to visit wherever before deciding but what do I do?

pros and cons list of each location. hate the cold? new york is probably not better than california then.
hate 8000 dollars for a studio apartment? probably don't want san francisco.
hate spics? well thery're everywhere, but you will have less of them in LA than in SD, so it sounds like LA is your best bet.
you can also try denver for similar weather and less gays.

When I go there, what do I dedicate my time doing? I'm guessing looking at jobs and housing is a given, but what things would I need to find out in person that I wouldn't know before hand?
>>18310356
nothing really. jobs and housing pretty much covers it. anything else would be specific to you, such as what kind of restaurants, what kind of area you want to live in etc.
i think you're over thinking this. which is understandable because where we live seems like a really important thing. but 99% of people are just born where they're born and move wherever opportunity tkaes them instead of making a calculated decision. considering we spend most of our time in our homes, and even when we go out, every city is going to have clubs, restaurants, and other similar shit, it doesn't actually matter where you live unless you have an extreme preference for weather and climate (beach vs plains etc)

I probably am. I have always lived here so I'm a bit weirded out by the idea. Im not too picky on weather but I would like more warm I suppose.
One more question. I like the idea of west coast a bit. If I was somewhat close to the ocean I think it would be nice. What are some of the not super high cost of living cities sitting on the west? I have researched this on the web but it seems like all sites pretty much say your fucked if you make less than 100k a year in california. I dont really buy that. Thanks.
With an engineering degree you'll make more than 50k out here just FYI

I live in los angeles with a view of the hollywood sign living in half of a 2 bedroom apartment and i only make 1500 a month.
the prices have certainly gone up since i moved here but even if you moved in to my spare room (which i currently charge 1200 a month for) plus 30 for electricity a month, 13 for gas, and 27 for internet you're still only paying 15,240 a year for your basic living needs. assuming you eat in for 300 bucks a month and have car insurance plus gas at about 300 bucks a month and the average cell phone plan is 60 a month, thats still only
23,160 dollars a year.
thats roughly half of your 50 k a year (before taxes) but even after taxes you'd still have more than enough left over to eat out, buy stuff, and save money.

Thanks for that info. I figured the cost of living was not too accurate but you really put me at ease there. I dont know why its such a misconception that the cost of living in california is too high.

i mean it is high. a two bedroom apartment in the shitty building next door costs 3000 a month. thats more than my parents entire monthly mortgage for a mini mansion up in oregon. you could fit my entire apartment in their bedroom + living room and have room to spare.
its high, but theres millions of young adults surviving off of jobs that are barely higher than minimum wage, but they all still manage to have their own bedroom.

I started out in the bay area since that was the only place that offered me a job right out of college back then
Lived there for a few years and now live in Texas
I feel many engineers start out in the bay area, basically they do their time there, get experience and move on. You don't have to live in The City (SF), typically people will live in San Jose or the surrounding areas, even as far as Dublin
I had to crimp on my living standards though, meaning housemates, split utilities, it was a pain so I eventually had to leave they bay area due to the exorbitant rent, and that was back then

Just curious, do you have a girlfriend?
>>18310451
I don't date. why?
>>18310453
What do you mean you don't date
>>18310455
i have flings here and there, but i dont really date. like I'll go out and have fun and then have sex, but it rarely lasts more than a few weeks. i don't really like to be tied down

if the point you're trying to make is that i have creepy decor, I'm aware, when i bring bed buddies home they do not appreciate the giant painting of a screaming man i have hanging across from my bed
>How do I decide where I want to live?
Not in Vancouver or Toronto or any other place with insanely high cost of living, I'll tell you that - literally one of the highest in the world.
