Hello...
I received some great advice here last week. I'm working on a literary novel (i.e. not commercial, action-movie stuff). One of the character is a hacktivist and involved in the deep web. As a technically-challenged analog type guy, I know very little about the cyber realm.
Last week, one of you said, "the deep web people I know are not "gangs of hackers." They are a bunch of low tech illegal business owners and maybe one guy that knows computers. He generally works for himself."
I'm wondering: how does the guy "work for himself" in relation to the deep web operation versus someone who "doesn't work for themselves"?
If anyone can elucidate this for me, I'd be grateful. I also wonder if hacking the broadcast of a college football game would be a feasible project for a hacker? The character is aware it's unprecedented, but is this beyond realism?

For fun? Yes, for experience? Yes! Impress some people? Yes!
Anything other than that no not really.
If you're a beginner you should do it, this might show you complicated stuff, limitations, planning, will to go on and reach your destination which will always be a great reward in the rnd with hacking.
But dont get yourself in trouble, double check if there is risk.

Your plot almost sounds like Mr. Robot but in a school-based setting
