Should I get a Penny Board or just update my skateboard to a cruiser? I am looking for a way to get to and from work a bit quick, to cruise around, to grab food, etc. I am just not sure what would be the better option, so what do you guys think?

People on penny boards look like fucking faggots, desu. Putting cruiser wheels on ur board is fine but I think the pic related or something like it is a nice in between
Fuck pennyboards. Long board or cruiser I'd the way to go.
Hey OP.
So I bought a "traditional" skateboard because I thought it'd be fun to learn tricks and roll around.
It turns out it is.
It also turns out that learning tricks as an out of shape adult is fucking hard.
Also penny boards are gay as fuck and generally speaking, not well made.
I'd get a basic cruiser with a really wide deck and some big soft wheels.
Also, get a fucking helmet. Don't be an idiot. You will fall down and you don't want to become a retard over riding a skateboard you aren't able to safely ride. Who gives a shit if you look silly.
the patrician option is to turn your own board into a penny board. It's easy to cut out your own shape from an old board, and it'll feel good. No point in wasting money on a small board when you can cut a board into a penny board yourself.

If you have any sense of balance and self awareness on a skateboard, it's pretty damn hard to fall and hit your head, and if you're that uncomfortable on a board that you're worried about turning into a retard from a fall you shouldn't be skating tbqh, but there is no harm in being safe.
Penny boards are really awkward to ride, even though I've been skating for 10+ years. They're often too small, trucks are too narrow and the plastic flexs a bit differently from wood.
Would recommend getting a cruiser any day over a penny board.

So get a bigger cruiser? Or just get softer wheels and a riser pad for my skateboard?

Turning your board into a cruiser seems like the move. I have a "longboard" that's roughly the size of regular skateboard and I love it. Can cruise around but also turn on a dime. Great for bombing down empty parking garages

I'd advocate for a cruiser. If you want to be economical about it just get some riser pads and soft wheels.
Get a sector 9. I've had this bad boy for 8 years and I still rock it.
Honestly... only look at my comment.
Get a landyachtz Dinghy. Very efficient. Halfway between longboard and skateboard..
None of that pennyboard BS if you even go relatively fast you'll get speed wobbles.
:D
