People like feeling sexy and like being able to do things that turn their SOs (or crushes) on. There's not really a ton of mystery as to why people like doing it.

As to why people KEEP DOING IT even though it's clearly pretty risky, that's because most of the time - the vast majority - nothing goes wrong at all. Then, when it does go wrong, it goes WAY wrong. That's the absolute least effective kind of negative reinforcement. You'll notice people still speed even though everybody *hates* getting pulled over by the cops. It's because most of the time that doesn't happen.

If an action has a 50% chance of being fine and a 50% chance of incurring minor negative consequences, people won't do it.

If an action has a 99.9% chance of being fine and a .1% chance of incurring HORRIBLE consequences, people will do it, and then feel betrayed or aggrieved when it goes badly for them.

Stupid, but it's how people work.

Sexting just seems like a easy way to fuck up your life. You see all that revenge porn shit? They had to make laws for that. Personally I think they should have left it lawless because the punishment was just that people would see your nudes and your reputation would be fucked. Sounds like punishment enough to me. Why should the law step in and punish the person who released the photos?

Because it's arousing. I don't care for getting pictures back, I'm not a very visual person. I just care that I just made him rock hard and he's telling me about what he would do to me if I were in front of him.

It's like a middle road between sex and masturbation, where you get external stimuli reminding of real sex (or promising real sex) but can still spend 100% of your focus and energy on how hot the stuff you are thinking of is. I could do it all day.

Responses make sense, but just to chime in a bit, personally only 1 of my past gfs was into this out of like 8. So it might not even be all that common, depending on what kind of people you tend to be involved with. Mine have been mostly pretty career-oriented people-- current one is too.

Your priorities are kind of fucked if you think it's a more deplorable thing to engage in mutual sexual play with someone, than to spread intimate material of someone without their consent.
Even if you think taking and sending nudes is deeply slutty, it's not mean-spirited, and doesn't put anyone but yourself at risk.

I think they're worse than porn, even porn shows a face now and then but in the case of nude pics, they're just body parts. For all I know, I could be getting a snapchat of someone else's boobs and I wouldn't know it if I don't know well the person i'm sexting with

To me sending nudes is just full retard. Again, not judging but I just don't see why you would trust someone with nudes. Granted the large majority of people would not fuck someone over like that but... why risk it?

Because once you send nudes to someone you are pretty damn convinced that they are not only not average but a much better, nicer, more pleasant, more engaging person than any random man.

Also because they sometimes get stolen or found by a third party, even if your faith in the person you showed yourself to turned out to be correct.

People do stupid shit all the time. If you leave your car unlocked that doesn't mean that it's not a crime anymore once it gets stolen just because you did something dumb. The law is there to see justice happening if you are powerless as an individual.
Besides in this day and age the boundaries are too fluid anyway. It is hard to make the distinction between a nude you took and sent, and a picture your lover took of you while you were asleep, unsuspecting and trusting. Should we not undress for someone anymore because we can get fucked over?
Hell, nudes taken by drones are already causing issues because people get caught and exposed on their own property.
