I'm good friends with my boss, and despite being less skilled than another employee got promoted anyway. Am I a bad person for accepting it?
This kid shows up early, leaves late, covers for everyone, fixes other people's mistakes, and we tend to just shovel extra work on him because he never says no. He's a very hard worker, but rather anti-social. He keeps to himself and when we ask about his life he says he's here to make money, not fake friends.
Did I do anything wrong? He seems annoyed I got promoted.
ask your boss if he can get promoted too

Your boss done fucked up, not you.
You could still lighten the other guys' workload tho, before he leaves for greener pastures.

your boss might have, but no, you didn't. you took an opportunity that was presented and saying 'someone else deserves it' just sets a pattern where you give what you deserve to someone else simply because you might think less of your self. even if he IS the better choice, he chose you for a reason, even if its just because you are likeable, which promoted positions often require even more than hard work.

What was your job and what did you get promoted to? Just curious, because it might be his antisocial/shitty attitude that is holding him back.
He's the classic invaluable worker that is disrespected for years...they eventually get another job or decide to quit. You guys (management) realize youve been mistreating your best employee and give him whatever he wants $$, hours etc. Then it all depends on how much pride the person has.
