Here's the situation, /adv/. This might be long but I'd greatly appreciate anyone who reads the whole thing and gives me feedback.
I'm a 25 year old guy who's working a pretty OK full-time job at a hospital. Decent pay, great benefits; that's about the extent of the positives. I've been in this line of work (sterilizing surgical instruments) for a few years. I'm very unfulfilled and bored. This shit is the same thing every day.
Since I was about 18-20 I've been pondering military service, specifically the Army. The one thing that really attracts me is the idea of being a medic. Something that working in the medical field has taught me is that earning your living by directly helping people is rewarding. I want to do good in the world. I figure that no matter the politics of whatever any upcoming wars may be, being a medic is a great way of doing good in the world. The focus is on saving lives instead of taking lives. I want to help people; even if Trump gets us into a dumbass senseless war I will be able to help people.
This is something that I've had an interest in for several years. My main concern is my family, mostly my parents. Almost immediately after I turned 18 a whirlwind of family drama started which I've been dealing with either directly or indirectly ever since. It started with my mom finding out my dad had been having MULTIPLE affairs for many years, which snowballed into a bunch of drama including huge family fights, our family home burning down, the resulting financial troubles, etc. It got so bad that I had to move back home to be keep an eye on my mom who was living alone in a rented trailer while our house was being rebuilt and my dad was living elsewhere looking for work. At one point we had to contact a suicide hotline on her behalf because of an emotional breakdown. This is just the gist of it all. I haven't talked to my sister in about 3 years. She's cut everybody off as a result of all the drama.

For one, I want an escape. As I said, I'm bored and unfulfilled. I want to get away from everybody's bullshit. I want an escape from the mundane day-to-day, I want to get in shape, and I want to do something positive in the world. I'm just concerned because every time I bring this up with my parents (who are miraculously still together due to financial necessity) my mom sounds like she's going to have another breakdown. After everything my family has been through, I'm afraid that doing this will just be another weight on everybody's minds. Will joining the military be a selfish thing for me to do? Will it put so much strain on them that it would be stupid for me to do so? I want to break out of my rut in a positive way, but I can't decide whether or not this would be fair to my family. Please, I need some feedback.

If they'd get freaked out over you joining the military, be a paramedic, nurse or doctor instead. You don't need the military to get in shape, escape the day-to-day grind or do something positive in the world.

I just don't know sometimes. There's moments where I see her point of view, but at other times it pisses me off that she just abandoned everybody.

You could also go for something like policing if you're not willing to commit so much of your life to your job and put strain on your family. There's a great career ahead of you too if you get past general duties and become a specialist.
I heard cops have a poor reputation in America though so I don't know if it'll be better than the military in your family's eyes, sure would be a lot less stressful for them though I'd imagine.

Nah, thanks for the suggestion but being a police officer is something I wouldn't be interested in. I like the medical field.

Do it.
Your reasons are decent ones, and there's a limit to how much you owe your family. I'm not going to say "You don't owe them anything anymore" - cutting contact like your sister did would be pretty crappy - but you don't owe them your youth, or your future. That's simply too much.
It's your life, and you have absolutely no obligation to waste it being a parent to ... your parents. It is frankly appallingly selfish of them to have derailed your life even this much (mostly selfish of your dad, though your mom's not completely innocent here either).
If this is the career you want, then take it.
