I want to resolve, what I believe to be, my depression myself. How can I do this; surely there is a way to do this?

Picture is unrelated by the way.

Instead of me creating my own thread I want to ask something for me.
I'm too depressed to go to family gatherings but don't have an excuse to give.

I dont know how to fix depression yet. I haven't tried medication aside for other reasons, but sometimes side effects were so bad I never want to try again.

The 3 big answers:

1. Consistent good nutrition
2. Daily meditation
3.Daily cardiovascular exercise

Give it about 3 months. I guarantee you'll feel a lot less depressed.

Give it a year and I guarantee your depression will be cured.

I'd recommend starting with a meditation retreat:

Try the no fap cold showers challenge
There has been theories that cold showers could actually "cure" depression, if not cure then be extremely beneficial in combating depression. Like people have said above me exercise and good diet help too

That's strange; why does cold showers have positive health benefits?

Does it trigger the release of some hormone or something?

As someone who tried the "do it yourself" method, go to the fucking doctor if you have the means. These people know what they're doing and they WILL put a perspective on things that you can't do by yourself. It's awkward and fucking scary to go, because it will be like admitting that there is a problem. But these people are professionals and at the very least can give you an expert opinion that nobody else around you is going to be able to give.

I've been in the rut for more than 6 years and my worst regret is that I didn't find professional help 6 years earlier. I felt like I was able to fix it myself and sometimes it did get better, but in the end I was still on a downwards spiral and I never realized. It took the doc 5 minutes to refer me to a specialist and she set me back on the right track in maybe 4 months tops. Seriously, it baffled me how seemingly effortlessly she got me back on track compared to the sweat, tears and frustration of 5 years of useless 'self help'.

It doesn't hurt much to explain your situation to your doc and see what he has to offer. You can simply walk away when you don't like what he has to say.

I'm honestly begging you, give it a try, it might literally save your life.

Solid advice, daily exercise, having goals to work towards and possibly just being around other people even without talking will hugely improve your mood, confidence and mental well being in general. It's probably not going to cure you by itself though.

It's a meme and the neckbeard equivalent of alternative medicine. Staring at the sun doesn't cure cancer and abstention isn't going to turn your life around.

Thank you, I'll see if I can get an appointment. What was did they do to resolve the issue? What was it like being lifted out of depression?

consistent schedule and set of goals to give a sense of structure and achievement, no matter how small that achievement/goal might be (taking trash out, doing laundry, etc.).

It's one of the main things that many people with unresolved depression all seem to have in common, and it helps so much to have that order after being depressed for so long.

She listened to me, showed me what was probably causing my depression and taught me how to approach it by trying to change my way of thinking about myself. She also gave me "homework" and our appointments functioned as a sort of deadline for me to get motivated to actually get things done, without really pressuring me. No drugs involved at all, although they did offer several times, if I ever felt like I needed it.

Basically what she did is guide me to the road to get out of the hellhole I was in, I still had to do it myself and it's still an ongoing progress, because sadly it's not something that completely goes away. I can say I'm genuinely happy now though, something I couldn't have imagined being ever again.

It's been great man, like I said I'm a genuinely happy person now. My life is nothing to brag about but simply having goals, progressing towards them, and very importantly feeling like you can achieve them is something I learned to cherish. It's not something that happened overnight, it happens slow and steady, but every now and then you realize what kind of progress you made and how that dark period falls back further and further behind you. It's an incredible relief.

Indeed there is.
