I'm looking to buy a new laptop for work. I usually have to run memory consuming statistic programs simultaneously. I was looking at investing in a laptop with at least 16GB of RAM and a motherboard that can handle up to 32GB of RAM if necessary. Is this overkill? Also, I'd like the display to be 17 inch or more and a 1TB hard drive. Where should I shop? I can upgrade the RAM and hard drive myself if it's cheaper
It's not overkill. Try amazon , newegg
Ebay(if legit)
Is there any hard and fast reason you can't use a tower? Because it'll be a lot easier to do what you want if you build a rig

Seconded.
Laptops are great and all but not really ideal for modifying with upgrades later on.

Why can't you just get a tower and remote into it every time you need to run a stats program? That way you can leave it running during the day, whereas with a laptop you have to stop it when you close it up into your backpack.
Laptops with high specs get fucking expensive.
