I took benzodiazepines to get on a roll, just to give me a nudge so I can talk to people without being super nervous. Then I stopped taking them and continued practicing.
It's a social skill. Skills are learned through practice.

Weather, news, a small compliment, what's currently going on in your current location, something about them like what they're wearing, how their day has been, an opinion on something insignificant, where they're from, what their job is, their hobbies
There's some ideas. Just continue to ask more questions about whatever they start talking about and be ready to answer some questions about yourself that they might ask about you.
