Hi adv, I am almost 19 and currently i'm NEET after doing badly in high school (UK sixth form). I have some options that I can choose from which will probably determine my whole life. I've been super sheltered and am very inexperienced with life stuff, even socialising is hard for me, so I want to pick the best path that will help me experience everything I want to, and will let me be happy properly.

I currently hold a place at a mediocre university in an isolated part of the country, the city is friendly (i visited recently with my mum to check the uni out) but very small and there isn't much to do in terms of activities, but there is a sports centre in the Uni and for my whole life i've really just been sitting at home gaming or on my PC, all indoor hobbies, so I guess I should be able to handle it for 4 years. However I was hoping that at uni I would get to make a big change to my life and see what going outside regularly and doing outside stuff would be like. I also really want to make some friends and maybe learn to talk to girls and uni would probably be the best way of doing this but as I said, it's an isolated uni so i'm unsure if theres lots of people who will like me there.

I can also go for an apprenticeship, I was thinking a skilled trade would be good to learn, I've kinda always hated book-learning but I was semi-decent at it so I never really seriously considered a practical job. But this would also be 4-5 years, and I don't think the environment would be good to make a lot of friends or meet girls. I would most likely have to socialise outside of work which I am not good at. The money will not be good and i'd have to stay at home (which id prefer not to do, several reasons, main being that I don't get along very well with my family and they don't like me much so its best for everyone if I go away) but i've heard once you're qualified and experienced a little then you can make a nice salary and it's rewarding work.

I was also thinking of trying to get into the military but my eyesight is pretty shit and i'm not fit. However i'm willing to become fit, and the military is something i've always kinda fantasised about since it's so different to normal life and there's the travelling and always being outside, so it interests me a lot. I know I could probably make some good friends in the army, there'll probably be a few people similar to me (one of my old HS friends who used to be like me but fitter recently joined the RAF). However there's no girls and people seem to look down on soldiers, my teachers used to say it's a bad idea to join the military too and so do my parents. It's again a 4 year contract, but it would probably force me to learn discipline and I could save a little money, the pay is around £20,000 avg a year.

Essentially, I can't decide which would be best for me to become a better happier person. I am currently moderately depressed and see a therapist, which I think was because of my isolated lifestyle and lack of social contact. I've also never really achieved anything before and I want to start my life properly now that i'm an adult.

A summary of my personality is: "introverted" (I get anxious in social situations that have more than 1 other person, but I do really enjoy being in a good environment with people if I know them a little and if they are friendly), gamer, chronic internet user, I know a little bout a lot, but i'm very lazy and find it hard to dedicate myself. All of this I want to change to the opposite. I want to be one of the people like my old buddy who spends most of their day doing 'real' stuff, lots of friends and socialising, successful in doing long-term things, and not reliant on internet or anything to stimulate my mind. I also want to be fitter, but I think all of the options above will help me become fitter and active.

If anyone has any input it will be much appreciated. Thank you for reading this long ass post.

eh, I guessed it would get that reaction. A bump is better than nothing though, maybe someone will end up reading it out of boredom.

Right now, the world needs tradesmen. You can get good fucking money and plenty of work going into the trades. However, automation is a thing, and trying to predict what the labour market is going to look like in 10 years, let alone 20, is a crapshoot.

The military is a great option for SOME people. If you need to be disciplined and can't do it yourself, then it can give you some much-needed structure in your life. However, it means you'll be devoting 4 years of your life to advancing the interests of sociopathic warmongers & fucking up the lives of innocent people. And you might get dead for your trouble.

You seem to be looking for a crystal ball, but unfortunately, no one here has one. There's no way to accurately predict what life decisions will make you a happier person, and once you do choose something, there's no way to compare it to your other previously-possible choices. You just have to pick something and jump in, OP.

Thanks, I am still finding it hard to decide if a trade is the best thing in the UK. We don't get anywhere near the salaries i've seen stated on 4chan and reddit for americans.

If I joined the military it wouldnt be in a combat role, something in intel would be cool, or even engineering would be interesting.

The crystal ball thing is exactly right but I wish there was a way to predict what's best. I wish I knew myself well enough to figure out what to do with my life. Maybe i'm delusional but I always wanted to be rich enough to never worry about money and I wanted to be seen as 'successful' by family and friends but I dont think it will happen now because I don't know how to attain it.

Thanks for your advice.
