Since most people manage the latter just fine and even 4chains got normal people, these are clearly irrelevant factors.

So either OP was fucked from the start or it's the amount of time he spends on these things that is decisive whether it has any negative effect on you or not? Pretty much any activity in excess can have negative effects, so focusing on the activity itself is silly.

Y'know it's funny. The point I was trying to make was not that she is either above or below me; I see her as my equal. The point is, we try so hard to impress others, even when they don't care. Ultimately it feels like we're trying to impress ourselves in practice. Because I know sure as shit she wouldn't care about my behavior unless it affected her directly somehow.
