Been trying to lean basic social mores but I think I fucked up.
A friendly acquaintance (but not really a friend) posted a selfie with him + his gf on instagram and I commented "cute *smiley face*"
i checked back 8 hours later and hed deleted my comment and disabled commenting on the post completely. I assume this is my fault, ofc.
we're both guys, but i can be pretty campy sometimes + i dont know him that well, so maybe it was inappropriate of me?
should i apologise to him or something?

There's your problem.

How big of a fuckup is this?
is there anything i can do to mitigate things?

Just apologize to him the next time you see him.
honestly i don't see the big deal, you probably are a creep in other situations
Jesus Christ, OP
Forget about it and never mention it again. Bringing it up again to apologize would only make things very awkward.

This OP, I don't know how as a straight male you though commenting "cute (smiley face)" on another man's profile would be considered normal or not weird but if I were the other guy, I'd think you were a weird faggot. I would never talk to the guy again and definitely never bring it up.
