I'd like to be a sailor, but I don't want to commit to the military. How do I get on a boat?

Join the merchant marines. They're the guys on the cargo ships with all the shipping containers.
Apply for jobs on a boat.years back I saw jobs as a deckhands wanted but those types of jobs are mainly around places with water...They seem to pay good but require month on the water at times.
