So I've been getting calls for over a week now, once a day from an unknown number.
They either call at from 8am to about midday.
Every time it's the same thing:
> "Hello?"
> silence
> "Hello?"
> silence for 10 seconds
> weird dial up sort of sound
> they hang up
What or who could this be?
Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
Should I just stop answering when I see an unknown caller?

Did you look up the number, or does it literally not say? It's probably just a telemarketing thing. I get a bunch of hang up calls every day, but they don't have any noise, they just disconnect.

I can't look up the number, and I can't block the calls

It could be a fax machine or other electronic thing dialing what it thinks is another fax machine and expecting to be greeted with signal beeps and boops, and when they don't come it hangs up.
