I'm hoping for some advice on pursuing your dream job or life. How did it work out for you? Did it crash and burn, were you successful? Where are you now? I'm just about the turn 30 and I have always made the safe decisions in life. Its worked out pretty well but I find myself overwhelmingly unsatisfied. I really feel my work life balance is probably totally screwed. Not to mention my once awesome state is being fucking overrun with people making cost of living rocket out of control. Even with a 6 figure income I watch the opportunity in my city dry up plus its just not the same place I grew up in and loved. My girlfriend and I are ready to move and start over from scratch, but like anyone I have the fear that if I'm unsuccessful I'll have shot myself in the foot. So people who said fuck it and moved and tried for their dream job and life, how did it go? Would you do it again success or failure?

It depends. What's your dream job? Are you suddenly thinking of pursuing acting but have never hit the stage a day in your life? Want to write the next great American novel but haven't written anything more grandiose than an office memo in ten years? You're not gonna make it.

The problem is getting your dreams perverted and fucked with too, because so much shit is out of your control. I got a job doing social media for a division of SEGA, which was a total dream for me. I fucking loved it, creating content, doing stupid shit with Sonic, showing up to community events with games, etc. I got to flex my creative muscles and work for a company I loved. But they sold off that division, and instead I ended up with bosses who didn't give two shits about community or content, and I spent most of my time updating websites, filling out spreadsheets, and making Facebook ads to show profit, profit, profit. New leadership kept giving me more and more bullshit stuff that they thought they could force me to do, and I eventually ended up hating the job and the dream was dead.

But all of the profit driven shit I did pushed me into digital marketing, so while I do nothing creative now, I make 3x my former salary working for a much more successful company fucking with spreadsheets all day, with my dream of writing one day all but dead.

I currently work as a General Contractor, all the permitting and legal bullshit is making me go slightly crazy. Not to mention dealing with constant project delays fucking up time lines and job profit. I have been brewing beer for about 6 years and really enjoy it. So I would be looking at moving somewhere where there isn't a brewery and opening up shop in a tourist town or small city. I have never been able to work for a company so that is out of the question and I really would like to be out of construction. If it all goes to hell I'm sure I could go back into being a contractor but it would be less than desirable.

I've found that defining goals is the most important part of accomplishing them. People have the end goal of being "successful," which is pretty vague.

For the goal of getting a "good job"- you have to know what kind of job you want: persue the credentials, build a résumé, and secure it with the interview.

>So people who said fuck it and moved and tried for their dream job and life, how did it go?

If I had the choice all over again I would apply in cities all over the United States, and move to the place where I have a job secured. Moving without a steady income is a pretty bad idea, and really should only happen if you are left with no choice.

>Would you do it again success or failure?

It is a success now after failure and many hardships. To be honest it's one of those things that has built my character, and after going through the first few years I have a place that I can sentimentally call home.

I always had the idea that success was all about a pay check. Now that I have it I'm realizing that maybe more than a big pay check success is having good relationships and providing something that other people enjoy. Also having the free time to enjoy yourself and not working all the time. Basically I would be moving somewhere with no job and kind of flailing for a while to make something work. That's the part that concerns me.
