Finally got over my job anxiety and walked into a local temp office today, I was hired immediately for a position that pays exactly what I asked for. Problem is that I have eight dollars to my name and it'll be three weeks before I get paid. I have enough food to last me for another ten days, probably, and enough gas in my car to last five days. I'm looking into selling my blood but I'd really appreciate some other ideas for making $40. I won't mooch off friends or family.

go to your bank and ask to take out a line of credit, you'll be approved by tomorrow.
you should always have a credit card or line of credit ready for this type of situation.
Just explain the situation to your parents and borrow it. $40 isn't a lot of money, and you could show them the paperwork to let them know the job is legit and you will actually pay them back.

Do not do this

good idea. he should just get fired when he doesn't have gas.

Its a lot easier to borrow 40 bucks from your parents than the bank. I should know. I'm Dave Ramsey

One: My shift will run from 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. I can get into the bank on Saturday, but that's cutting it concerning close. Two: I doubt I could get anything more than a "secured" credit card, which is code for a debit card they charge you a yearly fee for. I'll try it anyway and keep what you said in mind for the future.

I've already borrowed from my parents, this isn't an option.

Why?
Sell some things? Pawnshops exist for a reason.
Do not get a credit card, they are evil.

I'll see if there's anything I can hock, but I'm seriously poor. Also, you're the second person who's said that credit cards are a bad idea without saying anything to substantiate the claim. If you pay the balance before the billing cycle ends you aren't charged any interest, and by law the cycle cannot end within 24 days of when the credit line was first opened, so I would have the time I need. Assuming I can get an actual line of credit and not a secured card that requires me to deposit money to use it, which is the normal entry level card these days.
One bump and then I'm letting this thread die.

It's a temptation to not live within your means. A risk factor that isn't worth covering a single weeks' overextension in the here and now.

I used to work for a credit provider, which is why I know about the law regarding billing cycles. I'm not inclined to agree with you about being tempted, I seen train wrecks and I know better.

Inform your employer of the situation. They can give you an advanced payment.

This.
Or if they refuse, which is dumb desu, then try to sell some video games or dvds that you don't care about anymore.
