>she acts effusive for a couple weeks, approaching me in the street, saying we should go out for some drinks soon, liking everything I post on Facebook and shit
>suddenly she starts behaving cold, taking 24 hours to respond to a "hey where u at" text I sent on a saturday night with a laconic "I felt sick so I went home"
Why?

Ask her, not /adv/.
Try to be more direct with her. Ask her on date. Dont play mind games. If she wont show interest, just go date another girl. Dont search for reason because sometimes there is none.

Imma tell you like I told r9k
There was an interval of like 2 days between her last hint of interest and that saturday night. I just asked on saturday morning if she was finally going to attend to a concert which she said she'd probably go to when she approached me on that same week, and she took 6 hours to respond me by asking me about the hour of the concert and telling she would be working until 2am. At 3am I asked her if she was around and she didn't respond until 22 hours later. I don't feel like I missed any opportunity.

I guess I'll do that. Maybe in a couple weeks, will that be fine?

Shes a butterfly and only felt hot for you for a short amount of time. The reason for this is unimportant. Move on and find somebody else.
Dont give this any thought, some people are just like that.
