I've been looking for a hobby in order to make friends and fight off depression, so I've set my mind on tabletop RPGs and when I have a better understanding of them I'll look into local groups. What are the best ones to get into? The most popular seem to be D&D, W40K and Shadowrun but I'm totally new to the scene so have no real clue where to start.
W40K coolest lore
D&D is ridiculously common and the latest edition is really recent. There's even a lite ruleset for free in the Wizards of the coast site.

>RPG for meeting people
Congrats, you'll also get to meet both women and men.
I wonder why this isn't more recommended around here.
Maybe I should start with D&D since it's the most widespread game then move on to more obscure games later.

D&D has way more girls in my experience than warhammer. Plus way cheaper so less elite.

Good to know, so I guess I should start by downloading the free rulebook PDF and practising character creation? Anything else to start with or any recommended stuff to buy?

Not really, dunno what it's like round where you are and what the groups are like but we always left shit up to the DM and pretty much did nothing but turn up.
