You need lots of connections.
As I recall, you essentially need to already be politically successful, and essentially have people back and support you just in order to become a viable candidate. That's only one requirement, really. There are quite a few more, like not having a criminal record, having sufficient education and financial status, and blah blah blah.

Not technically as difficult as it is to become a pope, but you do essentially have to be born into it all the same.
