If you're asking that question now, then probably before now.

What do you mean?

When you can't function in society.

Pretty much there already.
I'm living off savings, and my only 'job' is a 5 hour shift every 14 days. I can barely make it through those.
I get intrusive suicidal thought.
Nightmares every night.
I panic and have trouble breathing when trying to do small things.
I have physical ticks (Randomly shake, fall down on floor, punching myself)
My place is a dump, trash everywhere.
Just to mention a few things.
My problem is I can keep up this way until my savings run out just fine, so there is no rush to do it yet, I also feel it would be best to get actual care.
Luckily I sleep fine apart from the nightmares.

You shouldn't, unless recommended by a psychiatrist, therapist, or scared loved one
When you feel like you might kill yourself actually and lose control is when you should be checked in, like you need people to watch you.
Otherwise you won't benefit from it over just going to your doc and getting your meds.

When you can't function well enough to the point you become a danger to yourself or others.

Holy shit anon, get help.

And I thought I was a desperate case... Not to sound rude, but you made me feel better off about myself. But remember, there's almost always someone worse off than you.

If you are in the US, DON'T unless you are beyond non-functional.
I have been hospitalized twice and it is expensive as fuck and arguably just made my problems worse.
If you need 24 hour monitoring to make sure you don't jump off a cliff, then have at it, but find other methods to cure lesser ills.

I'm European, so it will be free.

Problem is, I cant afford therapy, and therapy is needed to get drugs.
Like, my psychologist literally told me next time I came with suicidal thought (in 7 days) she would sign me up for meds.
Money ran out tho. So I never had that session.
This was more than half a year ago.
