GF and I have been going out for a few months and it has been going very very well.
Her ex has recently started commenting and liking all of her friend's pics on social media. This is new. Should I be worried? Does this mean they're talking? I can't think of any other reason he'd be all over her friends and family's shit. How should I approach this - just ask her if they're talking? She already knows I would not be comfortable w/ them keeping in touch.

From my point of view, I don't see why he would be doing this unless they had been talking and becoming more friendly to each other otherwise. It just seems like a really shitty primary way of weasling back in.

Yes they are talking, at least on the social media chat. The guy wouldnt just start commenting out of nowhere. Tell your gf that it's not cool and see how she reacts. If she gets mad or anything, she's up to no good. Get off the sinking ship.
