The world is a changing place, you can't just wish things were the way they were x amount of years ago. Adapt or don't function in society. Also if you are a teen/young adult, it's just how they are, constantly changing and growing. They may have a completely different outlook on life than they did the previous day. As an older person you tend to solidify your views on life and your goals/desires.

me personally its because every marriage I've ever seen has ended in divorce or extreme unhappiness
I'm happier alone anyway
They don't. You simply spend far too much time on /r9k/. Stop letting it poison your mind and go outside for a change.

Fear.
Nobody wants to settle down for the wrong person. And I'm willing to bet, most people don't even know what they're looking for in a partner, let alone a lifelong partner.
Some people think, better explore while I still can. But they either end up crashing and burning because of it, or being unable to settle down.
Still others go by the old "It's better to be alone than in bad company".
No extreme is ever good. Fear of commitment is an extreme, but also not wanting to settle down and being totally promiscuous, another extreme.

It is not as necessary to be in a relationship as it was before.
There is no practical benefit from dating anymore.
