What happens when you try to cross state borders in America? Do they stop and try to search you?
Fuck off we're full, if you're an illegal immigrant.
But if you're here legally, land of the free. You are free to cross. No inspection whatsoever. Travel by car, no problem. By air, no ID needed, just regular purchase of a ticket and typical airport search. You can travel between any of the 48 continental states by train or bus or car. No searches.

To Canada its just "what is the nature of your visit?" Then they might search your car. Have your passport.
To Mexico its all of the above, except they definitely search your car, dogs and mirrors to see under car and all. Might have to pay I forget.

not 100% accurate, you can still be searched with toll roads which are often at state borders
it's one of the main reasons people new to smuggling in good fireworks get caught
random police checkpoints are also a thing, but those are rather rare
there's indeed always a way around a search, but searches definitely can happen during travel if you don't have the right route
