General advice: Hanging out with an old crush/friend

Hey, I'd like some advice but I wanna give you all some backstory first.

In my first year at University, I met a girl and I started crushing on her, still do a fair bit. We spoke very frequently and eventually I ended up asking her to the movies. At the time, I guess I was so nervous totally I forgot to pay for her ticket. The night was pleasant, but it wasn't anything amazing. Timing was bad because we had a test coming up in a few days so we left fairly quickly, too.

Afterwards, we both became too bogged down with Uni work, but I also feel like she might've wanted to distance herself. Maybe because I didn't pay, or maybe because I did something else? I don't think I'll ever truly know. Regardless, we were still friendly but spoke far less than before.

During my second year, we still spoke but not as much as before, until towards the end of the year, where for some reason or the other we started speaking a fair amount more. It's still nowhere near that initial first year level but we talk a fair amount, and even ended up talking on the phone for 4 hours till 2am while she was overseas.

I'm in my third year now, and earlier tonight, she randomly brought up a movie she wanted to go and see, and I thought she might've been hinting at me. I asked if she wanted to go and she responded 'ofc, I have no one else to go with'.

Maybe I'm being pessimistic but I'm pretty sure there isn't anything special going on, especially given her reply. But I'm confused (and hopeful I guess) as to why she didn't ask anyone else because I'm fairly sure she could've gone with someone else.

Regardless, we'll be seeing the movie sometime soon. Should I pay for her? Should I treat this as a date or just hanging out? Any thoughts you might have on this whole thing? I'd like some advice.
