I think it's legitimate in some circles, but I also think it's more often than not co-opted for sensitive individuals in a cry for attention.

I know this guy that I went to high school with that was the MOST sensitive little fat gay kid in the world. He'd have a big cry if his lunch was cold.

Now, ten years later, he's suddenly "gender-fluid," and has a beard, but wears makeup (lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, foundation), has fake fingernails, and wears some weird wrap on his head to work, all in the guise of "truly being himself." I think it's bullshit.
