Could be from anywhere - dogs, brushing up against someone else who has it

Gym would probably be sweat from a carrier

Easy to treat when it's that small of an infection with otc antifungals
Check to make sure it's not on your back too

Is it burning or itchy?

It is very easy to get athletes foot or other fungal infections at the gym. Get some athletes foot powder at the drug store if thats the case.
