Alright /adv/, is it possible to acquire the same level of knowledge in a subject/field that would be achieved by attending a university course just by reading books that are related to the field? Can I essentially get a college degree in something just by reading books? And by college degree I mean the theory that would be taught in seminars, lectures etc., internships and real world experiences excluded.
I would imagine it's possible in some subjects. English and philosophy.
If you self study diligently you can learn a shitload, only problem is you want to have a good professor for the harder math courses.
I recommend making use of MIT Opencourseware, and obtaining or renting Early Transcendentals by Stewart to get your Calculus legs.

Do you think that other courses are just too complex to learn them this way?

Sounds good, I'll check it out. Another question that I have: How likely do you think it is to get employed in a field that you studied this way but did not get a college degree to back it up?

Depends on the field and your level of knowledge, it might be a non-answer but that question really is a bit too broad to give a straight answer.
