Girls Advice for nerds who don't talk to girls

I'm an 18 year old still in high school. My friends just recently asked a girl to our school prom coming up in April. We are both nerds and have never had girlfriends before so this was a big deal. He was talking to this girl for several weeks before asking her to prom and they would hang out a lot and talk. My friend didn't know that this girl he was talking to had a boyfriend in college, and she agreed to go with him to prom but just as friends. So should my friend go to prom with this girl as just friends or abandon the idea all together and go by himself. I also plan on asking a girl to prom also how do I avoid the same mistake as my friend made?
