Depends on the type of music and the school. If you're looking for a classical music career, you want the degree plus outside lessons. If you want a pop/jazz/studio musician career, there are a few good colleges with a record of job placement. If you want opera, there are other specific schools. If you want to be a rock star, probably not.

As a music major, it's only as valuable as you make it. It really is, and it's probably true for every other major. Don't skate by. Don't blow anything off because you don't think it directly applies to you. Dig into it. Build connections. Do the work your classmates aren't going to want to do. And building connections is a big part of it. Being a musician is more than just being able to play your instrument well. Being good is just the start.
