Right now, what are the top 3 smartest degrees to obtain and why?
>>
shameless bump
>>
>>18050226
What're your reasons for going for a degree in the first place?
>>
>>18050226
Define smartest...
>>
>>18050226
>STEM degree if you're talented
>Business variant if you're lazy
>Social science if you don't want to be employed
>>
>>18050511
I'd rather not get into this
>>18050513
Best career wise and for job outlook, mainly
>>
>>18050521
There's a huge spectrum of value in STEM degrees though
>>
>>18050522
If you're going for a degree in order to make a lot of money, it's a waste of your time. You could be a trucker or a garbage man and make beaucoo bucks.
If you're going for a degree because of what your family thinks, it's a waste of your time. You need to do it for yourself.

What're your interests? What do you foresee yourself jumping out of bed for when you wake? What're you decent at?
>>
>>18050534
Pretty much, I really like math (at least the math that I've experienced so far)
>>
>>18050522
I mean do what you want to do. Do you have any skills?

I went to school for Nutrition/Dietetics and I'm definitely not the run of the mill Clinical RD. I work from home for a start-up and I live quite comfortable. It just all depends on what you want to do and how hard you're willing to sacrifice and work for it.
>>
>>18050536
What math have you experienced before? You're not really giving a lot of info to work with anon.
>>
>>18050226
>what are the top 3 smartest degrees to obtain and why
1: Business administration. If your dad is Trump then you get to inherit a billion dollar business.
2: Computer science. If you're really good at it and have connections you can get a job really easily.
3: Law. If your husband is the president you can probably become secretary of state and get away with selling classified information to other countries.
>>
Well i dont know about the smartest, but you sure as shit shouldnt major in history.
I learned that the hard way
Keep in mind though that any degree, even if its a fucking history degree, is valuable.
If you major in music for example, that does not necessarily bar you from a future in banking or management. A music degree instead of a management or finance degree would probably make that a little harder, but your degree does not define your whole life. Whats important is that you complete the degree, and then have the drive to make it work. If you have a great resume, and do a great interview, you will beat out someone whose resume and interview were just ok even if they have a more relevant degree.

Just dont worry too much, but definitely worry a little bit.
>>
>>18050547
Well I wasn't necessarily making this thread in order to find a fitting career for me but we can go that path if we want.

I've taken up to calc 1 and statistics. Math has ALWAYS been my favorite subject, one of the few that I look forward to in the day. I've never not aced a math class (even though my school isn't rigorous at all).

Whenever I hear of some cool math idea, I get happy and excited.. it's pretty weird. I'll tell my friends about the stuff I learn sometime and they'll look at me like i'm crazy for being excited about it. I think this is a good sign that I should do something math related
>>
>>18050569
I understand it's not what you wanted to talk about yet, the degree you choose can affect which career(s) you start out in and/or stay in. That's cool you're great at math. It's a good weird. You've got your pick of a bunch of STEM degrees. Do you like engineering or biology, chemistry? Wanna work for the government or contract? There's a bunch of possibilities m8.
>>
>>18050569
Sounds to me your ready for a path for aerospace engineering or even any type of mathematical engineering type of degree. Maybe even chemistry, but that's up to you homeslice...
>>
>>18050576
>Engineering
Eh, not really sure. I'm not sure how much I enjoy it being group work heavy. I don't like the whole machine and industrial aspect of it. I don't really enjoy physics.
>Biology
Don't enjoy it enough to get a degree with it. I also don't want to go to grad school as of right now, and I think biology isn't the greatest thing to major in if you're just getting your bachelors
>Chemistry
Somewhat interesting, but refer to above
>Government or contract
Uhh not really sure, can you elaborate on what this means
>>18050579
Again, don't really like physics, and don't want to major in chemistry.
>>
>>18050591
Be a Weeb the rest of your life then you fuck! You're harder to please than a 75-year-old nun. Be a man and fucking pick something and don't you dare say liberal arts or fucking gender studies cause I will hunt you down you lib scum.
>>
>>18050632
KEK!
>>
>>18050632
Why wasn't math offered as an option when I only talked about math
>>
>>18050676
Are you 11 years old?
>>
>>18050676

That moment you single-handedly prove that /adv is by far the worst place to get advice. This place is for cookie cutter, generic words of wisdom.
>>
>>18050679
What?
>>
>Right now, what are the top 3 smartest degrees to obtain and why?

-Trade certs, because they actually have jobs which means money. Clear, *relatively* honest path from entry level to rich level.

-STEM, but only if you're planning on doing something BIG with your skills. When the world says it needs more engineers, it doesn't need more faggots to sit in swivelchairs and expect lavish lifestyles.

-Law, but only if you know damn well you're going to hell and it's exactly what you want to end up for your own purposes. If you dream of helping the poor as a lawyer then you're going to end up poorer than they are.
>>
>>18050559
>2: Computer science. If you're really good at it and have connections you can get a job really easily.

You don't even need connections, just mad skills and proof that you can get along with people.
>>
>>18050226

#1 CS--obvious

#2 engineering, specializing in sustainables like solar or geothermal. there is $$$ to be made

#3 econ/math/finance--make sure to get an internship at a bank or firm, dont be a lazy econ major, learn your math
>>
>>18050697
Some tiny insight on CS:

As soon as I can afford an expensive person, I am going to seriously need a genuine CS person. (Don't bother asking, getting the money to hire someone is the hard part.) C# and Javascript as familiar as breathing, basic grasp of webdev and IT, but mainly a guru-like understanding of hardware and efficient design.

Every single time I ask a complicated question and get a kindergarten answer pretending to be smart, I want to punch that person then punch myself for bothering to ask. People who like to coast through life need to stay the fuck away from these majors, and stick to government desk jobs.
>>
>>18050689
> how comes nobody said math when I said I'm interested in math??

Dude. You must be a child or a severely picky man child.
>>
>>18050706
No I'm curious as to why that wasn't mentioned like there was a reason behind it not being so

You're just over examining things
>>
>>18050705

there are plenty of low-level CS jobs. you dont need to be a genius to staple together some wordpress templates, and you can make OK money.

if you want a specialist, you start veering towards masters/phd folks.

someone who really "gets" CS is either going to demand a lot of money or a lot of autonomy (or both). no way around it.
>>
>>18050705
One more thing from me:

If I were interviewing candidates in a small room with a few laptops, I would say precisely this:

>open up a text editor and create a basic website saying 'hello world' in basic text.

Anybody who opens a text editor passes this part. Anybody who goes into Dreamweaver and reaches for the text tool is crossed off the candidate list. I am so fucking sick of these middle school students acting like they could pass a community college intro course let alone a 4 year program, if I see another one and can't get rid of him then I'm going to pound a fifth of vodka right then and there on the spot. And then when people ask me why, I will simply point.
>>
>>18050226
Not related to your OP but rather your picture. Kentucky should have at least Murray State covering a big portion of the Western State. WKU isn't even that popular here kek.
>>
>>18050729
I want to say I don't need a masters grad. The sad thing is, I probably do. There are just too many schools giving bachelor of science degrees to folks without a damn thing in their heads besides opinions.

Me personally, I don't even care what degree a person has. People who introduce themselves by their degrees need to be slapped upside the head and given burgers to cook. If someone has accomplished something which actually matters, their degree becomes pointless to talk about.
>>
>>18050744

if you want someone who can learn to be a hardware guru, no need to look for a masters. just ask them if they prefer vim or emacs, and if they dont have an opinion then kick their ass out.

few people will have that kind of expertise outside of post-graduate schooling. undergrad CS covers the basics but youre not going to be doing anything substantive enough to make you productive in the real world.
>>
>>18050226
If you have to ask, you're probably not smart enough for them.
>>
>>18050779
>Haha you're curious about others opinions? Guess you're not smart enough to do any of them!

How does someone think like this... really what the fuck is wrong with you
