You should talk to some LGBT people about that experience because I'm sure that they can relate. Being gay doesn't say anything about your worth or masculinity. Have a look at Stephen Fry visiting a gay conversion centre. It's a great way to make a lot of money, and it's quite easy to say "Yeah your father/mother didn't raise you properly so your mind tricked you into being gay".

You can choose never to act on your feelings, but that is self-destructive, just compounding the self-hatred.
You can learn how to not feel bad about being gay (whether you act on your feelings or not). Experience has shown that to be the most leading-to-happiness path.

It all depends on the person. Thats not a question that can be given a definitive answer. Every guy gay or straight is differnt and falls somewhere on the Kinsley scale.

From my experience : im 22 and a self hating gay man. Im basically closeted with no intrest in dating or hookups. I hate the fact that im gay but I have no desire to change.

Doing so will only cause more agony and misery and worsen my depression.

Ive come to terms with it for the most part but its hard to deal with my parents and close friends judgements and comments thay have made in the past that have really hurt me emotionally.

Bud, I don't see why people want to hate themselves for being different. I'm straight but I think true happiness goes beyond finding someone of the intended gender if I wanted a family of my own (biologically speaking). I think you can be happy if you find someone that cares about you for who you are. It's the same with having a family, you don't have to be blood related.
