Am I missing something here? What do I do?
This is literally something you learn before the age of 10. And it's not one of those things that you forget, either.

So why is it not 20? 10+20+30+ 60
60/3 is 20

Divide the 30 by the 3 first, then add. PEMDAS you 8 year old.
>>17970687
Because Order of Operations you fucking idiot.
>>17970672
Must be a troll
I understand PEMDAS, but why are they asking for the average and writing out the three numbers like that
>>17970672
Division happens before addition.
So it's equivalent to:
10+20+(30/3)
=10+20+10
=40
So despite the blurb "We want to compute the average of three numbers" the answer is not actually the average of three numbers.

>>17970702
So why is it asking for the average of the 3 numbers of all it wants you to do is add 3 numbers after 1 number has been divided? Not OP, but the wording and the function doesn't add up if that's the case.
>>17970721
That's what I'm wondering. If OP thought they were asking for the average and sort of setting up the problem for him there he be correct.
>>17970689
Its BODMAS
>>17970721
It's not asking for the average. It's saying you want to find the average, and the first step to finding the mean is to add up the numbers. The question says "what does this equal?"
>>17970747
I'd argue that the question is ambiguous or the first sentence is irrelevant if that's the case. They tricked you into thinking you need to find the average when really you are doing the equation. It's even more ironic that the number they used to divide by is the number of numbers they are trying to average. But if that's how it's gonna be then whatever
