I have a horrible phobia of driving. It's so bad, I get nervous just making left turns at stoplights. I can only drive on surface streets, my palms get sweaty just from looking at pictures of highways like pic related. My school is about 25 minutes away if you drive on the highway, but it always takes me at least 45 minutes to get there. It's also annoying because driving on surface streets uses more gasoline.
I'm going to my grandparent's house on Christmas. Someone will drive me there, but I'll have to drive myself back. I'm trying to find a route that will avoid highways, but if I can't find one, I might just have to skip Christmas. Honestly, I don't really want to go to their house in the first place, but it would really upset them.
What fucking do? I don't want to upset my grandparent's, but I'm so scared to drive, I don't know if I can do it.

Keep driving. With more experience you'll be fine. I was kind of the same way when I first started driving in Houston then later Chicago. When I got my first street bike the fear was 10 times worse. Started on residential and out of city streets. Within a year I jumped on the highway. Fear isn't a totally bad thing. It can keep you alive. Keep driving. You'll have less fear with experience.

It's a pretty far drive (~1.5 hours via highway, probably around 3 hours via surface streets). I don't know if Uber even goes that far, and if they did, it would cost a LOT of money.

Those are much more difficult than being on the highway. The highway might be a faster speed, but it's not the main place that accidents happen. The more you can use the highways, the better.

Offer to drive the route there, with them with you. Let them help you build the confidence, talk with them while you're driving the route. If you wind up having a little panic attack, they're going to be there to calm you down and talk you through it.
If you see you can drive there, you will see that you can drive back too.

I feel you op. 24 here and grew up poor with one car and not out in the country so I couldn't learn on some lemon. Never had the chance, and now I'm at the point in my job where not driving won't let me advance.
I drove the company vehicle with the apathetic guy who doesn't care about dying to the town 40 mins away a couple times. Highway the whole way and I liked it a lot more than street roads since i wasn't too worried about hitting someone else or anything but speed.
Still learning though. I'm going to try my driving test in a few weeks if I can't Smooth talk the dmv person to just let me have it, which a Dmv in another state tried to do but her manager was hesitant with it being another state.
