I guess to me it would kind of symbolize that he put absolutely no thought into getting something I would enjoy, or something that matches me. I get that it's kind of stupid, but it's how I feel.

I guess you're giving him a present too. You can ask him for advice about what you can give him (even though you might already know what), ask him about things he doesn't like, then say what you like and what you don't.

I wasn't planning on telling him like that. Just a basic "anything but a watch" if he asked why I'd just say I'm uncomfortable with something on my wrist all the time (which is incidentally true)
