The purpose of anti-depressants is to bring balance to the chemicals in your brain that are causing depression. You'll still sometimes have episodes of depression, but other than that, I'd say you don't really change much, due to my experience with meds.
And it isn't instant, either. It'll be gradual, so it won't be some sudden change that makes you into a brand new person. Some aspects of you might change, but you'll still be the same person as before. Just keep talking to your doctor and voice your concerns, and keep talking to friends and family who know about it, too.

Why did you lie to your dad about it? Having a support system really helps with depression in general, even if it's just some friends and not family. They can also notice changes in you that you might not notice yourself, which can give you an idea for if the pills you're on are good or if you need something else.

Let me tell you what it's like to come out of a depression. This is something a lot of people don't know, but when you are depressed, the world actually looks more grey, when you are not depressed, it's like turning up the saturation on a photo. What's even better, you can start to see contrasts in colors that all looked the same before. I mean this literally, but figuratively too. New attitudes, and perspectives will reveal themselves. All you need to do is be patient and observant, and enjoy your recovery process.

I second this, it messed my dick up and caused a bunch of weird withdrawals that lasted years. Do yourself a favor and stop before it's too late. You can beat it all without the drugs. It's really a crock of shit and even the doctors can't tell you exactly how they work. Psychiatric medicine has a looong way to go and in my opinion it's in its infancy. I took zoloft for two years, same class of drug I believe. It made my dick where it only got maybe 70% hard during sex, reduced feeling, ejaculation without any feeling or orgasm, sometimes couldn't even get it hard, sometimes it would get hard then slowly go soft during sex. In general it just fucked my dick up. Also I lost morning erections after I started it and it never came back for the most part. Overall zoloft turned me into a cucked, zombified, complacent bitch. I don't recommend any drug in the class.

Yes, but more than likely in my opinion all the other side-effects are going to outweigh lasting longer in bed. Like you might can last as long as you'd like but you'll be slamming her with a half-staff pecker the whole time and experience a weak orgasm. I've been depressed a large portion of my adult life and I don't take anything. Alot of times it's how you're living your life. Millions of people since the beginning of time have overcome depression and lived their lives before anti-depressants were invented. I think you can do it. Good luck buddy.

You may be able to overcome it without meds but I am telling you now try it. Take the help. I am trying to build up the courage to do so myself because I have always said I can do it without drugs. As of now I have extreme emotional imbalances and persistent thoughts of killing myself no matter how fucking stupid I know it is. My brain is in a constant tug-of-war and it feels like my being is slowly ripping apart. Don't pass up help, man. I wouldn't if I had any fucking nuts to talk to a real person about this instead of reading /adv to try to remember I am not alone.

I wasn't as depressed but I also didn't react to stuff as much so I took that as negative and thought it was masking my emotions. I tried Paxil first and had no change. I

I would say six months for the Prozac which isn't super-long. It was enough time to make a difference and I really should have probably stayed with it. I was just a very skeptical, stubborn, "I don't need your drugs, man" kinda kid.

Basically, I mistook the new feeling for my own ability. I don't know. If you can do it without it, then by all means don't risk it because any drug can have adverse effects with the right person. As others have said everything is different from one person to the next. I am honestly a little past a pill being the fix at this point. Just talk to someone you can trust regularly when you are in that headspace. If I had that I am sure I would be better off.

I can't bring myself to recommend a SSRI to anyone. However I have heard of a few cases where it helped people. If you think it will help or want to try it then just try it for a little while and start with the lowest dose. See how if goes for you. Good luck man.

Also what this guy said. Looking back at some deep holes I was in and really hard times if I had one person to talk to or confide in I wouldn't have went off the deep end like I did. Instead I chose to isolate myself and have no close friends and barely talk to anyone or leave my room which is a recipe for mental illness.
