Usually because they already had helpful skills or better learning methods. Back in school I did better than most kids even though I knew less because I was good at guesstimating based on the knowledge I had for example.

To take the vidya example, perhaps your girlfriend got better reflexes or thinks faster.

Besides, it's always harder to improve if you work on multiple things.

She was able to beat me in xenoverse. When I played her friends in smash I had a harder time than she did. Not that I sucked ass, but she was able to handle them much better than me. I haven't played either in a year. It's all really humiliating since I used to play melee as a kid.
