Currently a Senior in high school doing just fine with it. Im wondering will all the talk about college degrees being glorified toilet paper and student loans if it's a better idea to just join the marine corps instead.
pic unrelated
Could be. The US is pretty generous to ex-mil, and it can be a good way into a job long-term. Hell, you might decide you like it and go career. Really depends what you want to do with your life, though. Also, how /fit/ are you? It's not 1968 any more, they don't just take anyone with a pulse.
Why the marines
I hear the navy and air force are good if you want an easier time and you get to travel
My dad worked on planes for the air force and now he gets a bunch of shit for free
It's a smart alternative to college

Depends. If you major in certain things. If you major in Gender Studies, Journalism, Philosophy, Communications, etc. then yeah it's probably a waste of money. If you major in Science, technology, engineering, math, economics, business, you're better off.
You could join the Marines and get your college paid for, but only if you're willing to do that for four years.

How smart do you have to be to get in a good college and pass in a stem field? Honest to god i am only above average smart and i don't think i have what it takes to pass shit like organic chem and ab calculus

Unless you're kicking ass in highschool calc and physics, don't go into the hard sciences. Admission criteria aren't that bad, but if you can't hack it there, you'll shit yourself and die in university STEM. It's not even the level of intelligence so much as it is the type of intelligence. Business isn't that hard, though - above-average smart and a good work ethic is plenty there.
