Is college really a scam?
>>
Your question is pretty vague.

Is it overpriced? Probably.
Is it useful? Maybe not.

Is it a good experience? Yeah, usually. You get to share an experience with a bunch of other people your age, and you'll be able to talk to more girls than at any other point in your life.
Will it help you get a job? Yeah, usually. Shows you have the intelligence and discipline to get the magic piece of paper at the end, even if what you learnt isn't super useful.

>go get English Major
>learning Japanese on /a/ during free time
>get a job teaching English in Japan where I pretend I can't talk to the students and spend my nights playing EXVS at the arcade
Doesn't feel like I wasted my time.

It's not a scam but it is for some people and that's what they don't tell you

The current belief is that you must go to college to be successful and get a job and that's simply not true and probably the greatest lie that's told to the current generation. We are told that if we go to college get good grades and go into a respectable field we are guaranteed a "successful" future. The truth is that nothing's guaranteed. When you have your degree and you don't have the taught skills on how to get a job, deal with people, gain connections and hustle you're left working at Starbucks until someone answers your resume request on indeed. The market is over saturated with pieces of paper that meant something 20 years ago but now are insignificant almost. What matters now is standing out from the crowd beyond the piece of paper. Employers don't want to see what you've learnt but what you've done because the truth is a college degree is now barely a step up form a high school diploma. And the fact that high schools and colleges and governments premature this lie so they can keep making money from these people going into 1000's of dollars of debt does make it a scam.

I'm in the same position but... Why do you pretend you can't speak to the kids?

Because to be frank, I don't want them to think I'm some sort of otaku.

well people who are good at math are worth gold so if you want to make best of college you better go for careers heavy in mathematics. if you want to waste your time then go for useless degree in art or psychology.

I am considering this. What has your overall experience been like teaching in Japan?

>Is college really a scam?
I don't think so. I think for-profit online schools are more or less a scam--the degrees are less respected by employers than degrees from conventional schools, and they're designed to rake in cash rather than educate students.

And I wish we tooknow technical and trade schooling more seriously in the US, because a lot of people get degrees who would probably be better off with other training.

But no, I'd say that in general, college isn't a scam. I had a great experience, really enjoyed getting two not-very-practical degrees, met some beloved friends, and the woman who eventually became my wife.

Also taught abroad for a few years, and stumbled through a bunch of increasingly-less-menial jobs on my way to a career. My education didn't get me my jobs. But it did check boxes that needed to be checked in intreviews. And I wasn't particularly motivated professionally anyhow. But I've been able to find my way to a good life.
