How to function on low sleep

If I get 5 hours of sleep or less, I function very noticeably worse during the following day.

My thoughts come slower, my perception of the world is a little off, I make many more mistakes, my mind isn't clear, j make bad judgement calls...

It really ruins my day. Usually I just give it up and mess around doing unimportant things I can't screw up too badly until I get enough sleep again, but it's such a waste of a day.

How do you get your mind functioning well again after too little sleep?

You're right of course, but on the day what can I do? Coffee is one obvious option... I don't drink myself though.
