chemical exfoliation, not mechanical. One method that has worked very well for me:

>1 part distilled water
>1 part apple cider vinegar (with the "mother" in it--you'll see this on the label)
>put on cotton ball
>rub on as toner after washing ur face

and don't forget to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!! Also, the 1:1 ratio with apple cider vinegar can be a little harsh at first, maybe start with 1:1.5 or something and move up

masks and peels are really good. get into the habit of having a skin routine and stick to it. avoid picking incase of scarring,etc. your skins pretty much fine compared to some.
